Au Pair abroad

What is an “au-pair”?

As an au-pair you integrate into a foreign family and take care of their children.
- You generally work 30-40 hours per week depending on the country and you have at least one Sunday off per month and at least one day off per week.
- Your primary responsability is to care for the family’s children. This includes playing with them, taking them to school, helping them in their daily activities and preparing their meals. You may also be asked to do light housework.
- Your host family must give you free time each week to take language classes which are obligatory in some countries but not in all.
- The host family will require a certain flexibility from you according to their work schedules. Your work schedule may vary according the children’s ages and activities.
- You are fully responsable for the children during the parents’ absence. Therefore, please be clear and honest about your skills and prefereneces while filling in the application form.

Your profile:
- You must be between 18 and 25 years old at the time of application.
- It is necessary to have studied the target language for at least 4 years in order to communicate with ease once you arrive in the host country.
- You must have previous childcare experience - babysitting, camp couselor, daycare assistant, etc. Please specify in your application if you have experience working with handicapped people, senior citizens, etc.
- Your application must include childcare references which must be translated into the language of the country where you wish to work.

Pay:
In Europe you receive between 55 euros -90 euros per week

Insurance:
In most European countries the host family provides insurance for the au-pair. It is strongly advised however, to obtain an European insurance card, which will provide Social Security coverage in most of Europe except Great Britain. Butterfly et Papillon International proposes a supplementary insurance plan for au-pairs with the company ISI. Coverage includes general liability, medical costs, repatriation and 24 hour emergency assistance by telephone. Please contact us for further information.

Length of stay:
Most au-pair positions last from 6 to 12 months and 3 month positions are possible during the summer. We advise you to send us your application as soon as you know your availability dates (even 6 months in advance) as this will facilitate the placement process. The time it takes to be placed with a family varies from 4 to 8 weeks depending on your file and the period of year.
