What is an au-pair?
As an au-pair you integrate
into a foreign family and take care of their
children.
- You generally work
30-40 hours per week depending on the country
and you have at least one Sunday off per month
and at least one day off per week.
- Your primary responsability is to care for
the familys children. This includes
playing with them, taking them to school,
helping them in their daily activities and
preparing their meals. You may also be asked
to do light housework.
- Your host family must give you free time
each week to take language classes which are
obligatory in some countries but not in all.
- The host family will require a certain flexibility
from you according to their work schedules.
Your work schedule may vary according the
childrens ages and activities.
- You are fully responsable for the children
during the parents absence. Therefore,
please be clear and honest about your skills
and prefereneces while filling in the application
form.
Your profile:
- You must be between 18 and 25 years old
at the time of application.
- It is necessary to have studied the target
language for at least 4 years in order to
communicate with ease once you arrive in the
host country.
- You must have previous childcare experience
- babysitting, camp couselor, daycare assistant,
etc. Please specify in your application if
you have experience working with handicapped
people, senior citizens, etc.
- Your application must include childcare
references which must be translated into the
language of the country where you wish to
work.
Pay:
In Europe you receive between 55 euros -90
euros per week
Insurance:
In most European countries the host family provides
insurance for the au-pair. It is strongly advised
however, to obtain an European insurance card,
which will provide Social Security coverage
in most of Europe except Great Britain. Butterfly
et Papillon International proposes a supplementary
insurance plan for au-pairs with the company
ISI. Coverage includes general liability, medical
costs, repatriation and 24 hour emergency assistance

Length
of stay:
Most au-pair positions last from 6 to 12 months
and 3 month positions are possible during the
summer. We advise you to send us your application
as soon as you know your availability dates
(even 6 months in advance) as this will facilitate
the placement process. The time it takes to
be placed with a family varies from 4 to 8 weeks
depending on your file and the period of year.
